Sorry I have to write in English but my Swedish is too rusty. My 94 Grand Cherokee is making chattering noise when turning sharp corners or driving circle. This never happens when the car is cold but after driving 30km it is there. In addition to the clunking noise it feels that rear wheels have hard time spinning and the car kind of jumps.

I suppose this feels like a limited slip differential problem. I have changed the oil and also added some additive I happened to have. I think it was meant for GM vehicles. Is Jeep so sensitive that it would need some Chrysler stuff to get rid of this problem. Or could this be something in the transfer case?

Welcome to the forum! I think you're our first Finnish member.

I doubt that a limited slip diff (LSD) would cause the kind of problems you describe. A worn-out LSD simply stops working, instead acting like an open differential. The same thing happens if you don't put the required additive in the diff oil. Besides, the Trac-Lok LSD that was offered as an option for Grand Cherokees isn't strong enough to lock up the rear wheels like that. A Detroit locker might, but hardly a Trac-Lok.

No, my guess would be that the viscous coupler (VC) in your transfer case (TC) is going bad. That means that the center "differential" locks up, which causes exactly the kind of symptoms you describe when turning sharply, because it prevents the rear wheels from turning at a different speed than the front ones. The "jumping" behavior you mention is typical for this. This phenomenon is called "gear binding", meaning that the TC is subjected to tremendous forces that will eventually destroy it.

The fact that this problem occurs only when the TC oil is warm also points to the VC being the problem. The viscosity of the oil changes as it heats up, and a bad VC will become worse when it gets warm. If yours is working OK when cold, it probably means that it's just beginning to go bad. Eventually it might behave like this even when cold, and then your Jeep will be virtually undrivable.

The only fix for this problem is to replace the VC. Unfortunately they are fairly expensive (about €1000 in Sweden). An option is to replace the NP249 Quadra-Trac transfer case with an NP242 Selec-Trac. The 242 doesn't have a VC, and it will offer full-time and part-time 4WD, and also 2WD. That seems to be a popular choice in America, when the 249's VC fails. It is better for off-roading, but if you drive a lot on slippery roads in winter, the fully automatic 249 is really nice to have.

Talk to your local Jeep dealership before you do anything else (and do it as soon as possible). I could be wrong, and you don't want to make an expensive swap like this without getting a second opinion. Good luck - and don't forget to tell us what the problem was when you've solved it.

Hello, just a little bit of updating my case. First of all I want to thank Toolman for his very professonally written comment. I'm sure it is correct and I have started to proceed with my problem. I just became back from a three week holiday but before that I have already done something.

I called the local Chrysler dealership and asked for the VC price - 980€! Now we can see that there is now price difference between our countries in this case. I have good connections to the USA so I called one dealership there and their price was about $800! I wasn't satiesfied with that either and started to look for transmission and 4X4 specialists. My next found was $450 which sounds pretty good already. My final jackpot was a place with a price of $320. I took it. The part is small but pretty heavy so I had to use FedEx, Shipping was $80.

Now I have a part here, ready to install. I'm going to use a local shop owned by two brothers, they deal only with American cars. It'll be installed after week and a half. I'll inform you later about the labour cost in case somebody wants to take a relaxing Silja/Viking cruise to get there VC's installed here. It's only 65km up north from Åbo.

A little bit of another subject... when buying a used Jeep this problem is very difficult to find out. If you buy a vehicle from a private party, you don't usually test drive it for 100km after which the probem may occur. Is there any other way to find this out?

And another question... the yearly safety inspection where the brakes are tested. This all time allwheel drive shouldn't be tested on those normal testing devices. Do they do that in Sweden? To my knowledge it's possible to ruin the VC that way. Or could that actually be a way to test the VC? If it is good there should some preload like brakes would be little on and without preload it's defect. Does this make any sense?

Hopefully after writing this much this will show on your screens - not so familier with this page yet.

Get back later

I'm afraid my -94 have the same symptoms. I just got a quote from DieselTrim on 10,000 Skr plus VAT, It's like a death sentence.
I am really interrested to hear where you found a (VC) at a lower price?

Är det någon som erfarenhet av att byta en sån koppling, klarar en rookie det eller behövs det special verktyg.
Är detta typiskt för Quadra-Trac min har bara gått 16000 mil.

And this is how you do the swap. Not to hard, but I dont think it is something for a complete rookie.

Hello again

Sorry it has taken so long to keep you posted, but my problem's gone. It was the VC. Bought the part from the place that John also found on internet. The price has gone up a bit.

I think this is interesting for those who are asking shops about their prices. The whole job took 4.7 hours, the shop I used (mentioned earlier)charges 35 euros/hour. With this piece of knowledge you can compare offers you get and find out who wants to rip you off.

Winter is coming sooner or later, but doesn't matter - alltime 4WD rules!
